- Christchurch, with a population of 310 000 is the largest city in the South Island and the second largest city (after Auckland) in New Zealand.
- Christchurch has long been known as the most English city outside England although it is increasingly becoming a multi-cultural place. Many of the city's residents are of Maori, Pacific Island and Asian descent.
- Small to medium enterprises account for the majority of local business activity with 90% employing under 10 staff.
- Christchurch has the South Island's only major international airport and is generally considered the gateway to the scenic south.
- Canterbury people are passionate about sport. Rugby and cricket are particular favourites and the province's teams are often the national champions.
