Location

Christchurch is located on the south coast of England, a few miles east of Bournemouth.

Brief History

Christchurch has ancient origins. People are thought to have been living in the area since 3000 BC and in the following 5000 years it's been home to Anglo-Saxons, Romans and Normans. The majestic 11th Century Priory Church, which overlooks the town is one of the largest parish churches in England and was built on a site where churches have stood for the last 1,300 years.

From around the first century BC the Christchurch area became an important trading centre. In the 17th and 18th centuries Christchurch was home to whole communities who made their living from the smuggling of items like tea and tobacco into England to avoid having to pay taxes to the government.

Christchurch Today

Now it's holidaymakers who flock to the area, attracted not only by its colourful history but also by its sandy beaches and peaceful atmosphere.

Christchurch is a town of tiny cottages and traditional English pubs, excellent restaurants and specialty shops. Fishing boats still use the town's harbour as they have done for centuries, but these days they're joined by pleasure boats, yachts and windsurfers. The Christchurch Regatta held in August each year features rowing competitions on the River Stour, with events on the quay and in the town centre culminating in a spectacular fireworks display.

Christchurch also provides holidaymakers with an excellent setting-off place for exploring Dorset's beautiful and dramatic coastline. Nearly a million visitors come to Christchurch each year, either on day trips or for over-night stays.

Christchurch has a fast growing aerospace industry, thanks largely to the presence in the borough of the Bournemouth International Airport. The airport is one of the busiest in Britain, and many transport and aviation companies have been attracted to the area because of it.

The Sister City link with Christchurch

The Sister City link developed from a long-standing connection between the Borough of Christchurch and the City of Christchurch which was based on the shared name. The formal Sister City agreement was signed in 1975.
