| Chinese Chime Bell for Christchurch. |
A magnificent bell has been gifted to Christchurch by Mayor Li Xiansheng of Wuhan, China, to recognise the signing of the Friendship City Agreement in April 2006 by Mayor Garry Moore of Christchurch and Mayor Li Xiansheng of Wuhan. The bell arrived on 4 July, and has been installed at the entrance to the Council Chamber at Civic Offices in Tuam Street Christchurch.
The bell is a facsimile of part of a chime of bells, composed of 65 pieces with a total weight of more than 2500kg, which was unearthed in 1978 in Suzhou, Hubei Province. The bells are from the tomb of the Marquis Yi of the State of Zeng, 475 to 221 BC.
The intention of the gift is to strengthen the ties between the cities, and promote economic and cultural opportunities. Read the media release.
